What this means for you as a hunter:

• Hunters who harvest deer, elk, or any other cervid, outside of Pennsylvania can now take it directly to Brown Bear Taxidermy Studio A Game Commission Approved CWD Taxidermist.

• You can bring your deer to us knowing we are part of the effort to monitor and manage Chronic Wasting Disease.

• By working with a cooperator, you’re helping protect the health of the PA deer herd for future generations.

• Please note: Using a cooperating processor or taxidermist does not automatically guarantee testing. To ensure your deer is tested for CWD, the head must be placed into a Game Commission collection bin.

A hunter can use a Pennsylvania taxidermist for a deer that potentially has
Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), provided the taxidermist is a Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC)-approved co-operator.

• PGC Approved Taxidermists are authorized to receive high-risk cervid parts (head, spinal column, etc.) from deer harvested within a Disease Management Area (DMA), an Established Area (EA), or from out of state.

• How the PA CWD Program Works
  
  • Proper Disposal: Cooperating taxidermists ensure that all high-risk parts are properly managed and disposed of through a commercial refuse service to prevent the spread of CWD.
  
  • Convenience for Hunters: This program makes it more convenient for hunters who harvest a deer in a regulated area but live elsewhere in the state or out of state, as they can transport the entire animal directly to any approved cooperator.
  
  • Finding an Approved Taxidermist: A list of approved co-operators (processors and taxidermists) can be found on the PGC's CWD Interactive Map, available on the official PA Game Commission website.
  
  • Testing is Separate: Using a cooperator for taxidermy purposes does not automatically mean the animal will be tested for CWD.
   
• If you want the animal tested, you can submit the head to one of the PGC's free head collection bins located within DMA, or send it to a lab yourself for a fee if harvested outside a DMA.
  
  • Do Not Eat the Meat if Positive: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises against consuming meat from animals that test positive for CWD.
   

• Hunters who harvest deer elk or any other cervid outside of Pennsylvania can now take it directly to Brown Bear Taxidermy Studio Pine Grove PA.
